About East Sussex

East Sussex is a county in South East England. It is bordered by the counties of Kent, Surrey and West Sussex and, to the south, by the English Channel.
The ancient kingdom of Sussex had separate county administrations since the 12th century, with the county town of the eastern division being Lewes [1]. This situation was formalised by Parliament in 1865, and the two parts were given distinct elected county councils in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888.
In East Sussex there were three self-administered county boroughs: Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings. In 1974 the East Sussex was made a ceremonial county also, and the three county boroughs became districts within the county. At the same time the western boundary was altered, so that the Mid Sussex region (including Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath) was transferred to the administrative county of West Sussex.
In 1997, Brighton & Hove became a self administered unitary authority and was eventually granted city status in 2000.

	The Royal Pavilion - Brighton
	Experience the magical world of Brighton's Royal Pavilion, home to three British monarchs. Decorated in the Chinese taste with an Indian exterior this Regency Palace is quite breathtaking. The famous sea-side residence was built for King George IV, and was also used by his brother William IV and their niece Queen Victoria. Originally a farmhouse, in 1787 architect Henry Holland created a neo-classical villa on the site. It was later transformed into its current Indian style by John Nash between 1815 and 1822. Magnificent decorations and fantastic furnishings have been re-created in the recent extensive structural and interior restoration program. The Pavilion offers many services to enhance your visit including guided tours, provision for disabled visitors and education facilities.

	Firle Place is the home of the Gage family and has been for over 500 years. Set at the foot of the Sussex Downs within its own parkland, this unique House, originally Tudor, was built of Caen stone, thought to be from a monastery dissolved by Sir John Gage, friend of Henry VIII. Remodelled in the 18th century, it is now similar in appearance to that of a French Chateau. The house contains a magnificent collection of Old Master paintings, fine English and European furniture and an impressive collection of beautiful Sevres Porcelain.
