About Aberdeenshire

The things to note about Aberdeenshire include the natural environment of mountains, famous salmon rivers and superb agriculture (and its colloquial language "Doric" with a touch of old Scots); fishing from the many ports around the coast, now sadly declining due to fish stocks and European Union legislation; history, there being more castles in Aberdeenshire than in any other county of Scotland; whisky, as together with Banff and Moray, this is whisky country with many fine malt whisky distilleries many of which are open to the public; and, last but by no means least, Royalty, Aberdeenshire being the home of Royal Deeside with Balmoral being the summer home of the Queen.

Access to the area is straightforward with good road connections via the A92 from Dundee and the south, good rail links to Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow and Inverness as well as an international airport at Dyce to the north west of the City of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Airport

Aberdeen Airport

Aberdeen Airport is situated seven miles north west of Aberdeen city centre. Because the city is Europe's largest oil-related centre, the airport is the world's largest commercial heliport and the majority of the traffic through it are helicopter flights to and from the North Sea oil rigs. The airport is open between 0500 and 2230. Check-in is located at the front of the concourse with domestic arrivals and all departure lounges located towards the rear. The airport is equipped with shops, bureaux de change, left luggage and baby care facilities. For travellers with special needs, you can contact the airport call centre on +44 (0)1224 722331 or minicom +44 (0)1224 725082 to pre-arrange assistance or check available facilities.

Drum Castle - Kinkardineshire

Drum Castle - Kinkardineshire

This castle, one of the most beautiful in Royal Deeside, was owned by the Irvine family of Drum for 653 years. It is very special because it combines a medieval keep, a Jacobean mansion house and a later Victorian extension. The keep is one of the three oldest tower houses in Scotland, probably dating from 1290. The first-floor room, originally the Great Hall, now houses an impressive library. Superb furniture and paintings provide a visual feast for visitors. The atmospheric tearoom is in the original service area of the castle. Nearby, the shop has a wide selection of souvenirs and gifts. In 1644 soldiers destroyed the gardens at Drum, but today you can enjoy the Garden of Historic Roses, created over the last few years-especially delightful in June and July.
